Lee Broom

Mark's Bar, Selfridges

Lee Broom has designed a mobile cocktail bar for Selfridges in London, which will be operated by chef and restaurateur Mark Hix, inspired by the silhouettes and materials of mid-century design, and 1960s America, when entertaining at home was growing in popularity.

The bar will sit in the Men’s Shoe Galleries, and marks the department’s first anniversary, but has the potential to move around the store. It has dubbed by Lee Broom’s Studio as ‘the first of its kind in a retail environment, and the smallest cocktail bar in London’.

‘I have a great deal of experience in furniture, bar and high end retail design, so combining all three disciplines into one brief was an exciting prospect,’ says Broom, who has combined a sideboard, a hostess trolley and a tall-boy drawer set to form the main components of the bar. Each piece is a bespoke design, hand-crafted in the UK using polished walnut and brushed brass accents.

The spirit cabinet is stored within the sideboard and elevates out of it when in use, and the work surface also raises up to reveal the inner workings of the bar. To create a ‘domestic atmosphere’ Broom has added an oversized circular mirror, using the same wood and brass finishes. A matching long wooden table and stools accompany the bar.
